Prints by Contemporary Cuban Artists at the Cuban Art Space With few exceptions—the etchings of the late Belkis Ayón, and those of Choco (Eduardo Roca), for example—Cuban prints have been little seen in the United States, although many of Cuba’s best-known artists make prints. This large group show at the Cuban Art Space will help make up for that absence with an astonishing array of prints: woodcuts, lithographs, monotypes, serigraphs, linoleum, etchings of every kind. Many of the artists represented in the show—Paneca, Zarza, Mendive, Sosabravo, Cáceres, Vega, Lobaina—work in four print workshops on the island: the Graphics Workshop and the Serigraphic Workshop in Havana, the Print Workshop in Cienfuegos and the Artists’ Workshop in Santiago de Cuba. Others do their printmaking in their own studios—Nelson Dominguez, Choco, Sandra Ramos. The exhibits offers also a unique collection of early works by several of the artists. The Art Space has early works from the 1970's by Choco, Nelson, Sosabravo, and other artists, many of which have never been exhibited before. Besides the works that make up the formal exhibit, the Art Space will show portfolios and additional works by many of the artists. Among the artists to be shown are: Elias F. Acosta, Rafael Cáceres, Carmelo, Carlos Rodríguez Cardenas, Choco, Zaida del Rio, Nelson Dominguez, Roberto Fabelo, Carlos Garaicoa, Alicia Leal, Miguel Lobaina, Manuel Mendive, Esla Mora, Juan Moreira, Rafael Paneca, Sandra Ramos, Juan Carlos Rivero, Alfredo Sosabravo, Nelson Vega, and Rafael Zarza. |
