Waya or Wayacón (Julián Espinosa), b. 1931. He lives in Remedios, a village known for the observance of practices of Santería, the syncretic religion born of Yoruba and Catholicism, rich with symbolism and rituals. He is what we refer to as a "self-taught outsider artist" who has not had art training, and is essentially uninfluenced by artworld or market trends. In Cienfuegos, where Wayacón's work is sold, he is a man of many legends. His work was much admired by Samuel Feijóo (1914-92), one of the most important naive Cuban painters as well as a poet, journalist and lecturer. Wayacón's self consistent, singularly expressive vocabulary invites the viewer into an hallucinatory world through the merging of a brilliant coloration and unique graphic images.
