Waya
or Wayacón (Julián Espinosa), b. 1931. He lives in Remedios, a village
known for the observance of practices of Santería, the syncretic
religion born of Yoruba and Catholicism, rich with symbolism and
rituals. He is what we refer to as a "self-taught outsider
artist" who has not had art training, and is essentially
uninfluenced by artworld or market trends. In
Cienfuegos, where Wayacón's work is sold, he is a man of many legends. His work was
much admired by Samuel Feijóo (1914-92), one of the most important
naive Cuban painters as well as a poet, journalist and lecturer.
Wayacón's self consistent, singularly expressive vocabulary invites the
viewer into an hallucinatory world through the merging of a brilliant
coloration and unique graphic images.
-- Joan Crystal Pearlman, New
School University, New York City
Wayacón has had more than 20 one-man
shows, has been part of more than 60 Cuban and foreign group exhibits
and has been awarded more than 20 prizes in Cuban galleries. His art is
represented in museums and private collections in Cuba, France, Italy,
England, Japan and the U.S.A.
This is his first one-man show in the
U.S.
