William Pérez - Mabel Poblet

Works on Paper and Sculpture

May 11 – June 3, 2006

William Pérez is one of Cuba's best sculptors and installation artists. Born in Cienfuegos, he moved to Havana a few years ago, thus fulfilling a dream of having his own small work space in the capital city. Though tiny, the apartment in Central Havana which he shares with Mabel Poblet is orderly, organized and filled with the work of these two talented artists. (William's series of seven watercolors for this show depict the space -- two even document the exact measured space between objects.) William has shown in the Cuban Art Space before, in a one-man show (2000) and together with Adrian Rumbaut in an installation exhibit "Entre Nos/Between Us" (2002). This is the first time he has been unable to be with us during an exhibit, thanks to the dreadful policies of the Bush administration regarding the granting of visas to Cubans. In November 2003, William was invited to participate in the prestigious Havana Biennial.

Mabel Poblet is also from Cienfuegos. Just 20 years old, she moved to Havana after graduating high school to attend the San Alejandro Art Academy, the art school from which most of Cuba's most famous artists have graduated. When only in high school, Mabel, who comes from a theatrical family, was already showing signs of the important artist she will no doubt become. Her works are autobiographical and revolve around her family, her childhood, her home in Cienfuegos. As you can see, even the large work in this show, "Auto-Retrato," consists of hundreds of tiny images of Mabel as a child, even the pupils of the eyes are made up of the same photographs. This is Mabel's first exhibit in the United States.

The show runs from May 11 – June 3.
Gallery hours are:
Monday - Friday, 11 to 7
Saturdays, 12 to 5
