The
Cuban Art Space of the Center for Cuban Studies is devoted to promoting the work
of Cuban artists – painters, sculptors, ceramists, photographers, graphic
designers, craftspeople. Since its opening in September, 1999, it has presented
more than 50 exhibits in the Art Space gallery and at other venues. The Center
has collected more than 3,000 works of art, 5,000 posters and 2,000 photographs
from which it draws for its exhibits. All of the works until now have been presented in one-person or group shows for a period of one-two months. This is the first time that the gallery space has been turned over to a de-accessioning art sale, with works being brought down to the gallery from the third floor archival area! Of course, many works are not for sale and will remain part of the Center’s permanent collection for traveling exhibits and special presentations. But at any given time, there will be approximately 200 works on view in the gallery! And they will change daily: as works are sold, they are replaced by new ones. Most of the works for sale are by contemporary Cuban artists and fall into the categories of paintings, drawings, sculpture, ceramics, graphics. The Art Space has an especially strong collection of works on paper and works by self-taught artists. During the sale, special days will be devoted to posters and photography, and will be announced through our web site, cubanartspace.net. In addition, those interested in a particular artist or particular genre can call for further information (212-242-0559) or make an appointment to see works on the third floor. Among the artists currently on view are Franklin Alvarez, Jacqueline Brito, Nelson Dominguez, Carlos Estévez,Joel Jover, Alejandro Lazo, Kadir López, Mendive, Montebravo, Elsa Mora, William Pérez, Abel Pérez-Mainegra, Roberto Torres-Lameda, Wayacón and many, many others. This is a sale that is worth re-visiting several times during the course of the show - on our website, we can only show a few at a time, but you’ll get a flavor of the art! The gallery is open Monday through Friday, 11 to 7, Saturdays 12 to 5, and by appointment. The address is 124 West 23rd Street, between 6th and 7th Avenues. Telephone is 212.242.0559. Let us know if you have questions about particular works. You can write us at slevinson@cubanartspace.net with your questions. |
