Luis Alberto Pérez COPPERI
Camilo VILLALVILLA Soto
May 12-June 30, 2010
This exhibit brings together two young artists from Cienfuegos, good friends who exhibit frequently together and both of whom graduated as architects in 1998 from Las Villas University (Universidad Central de Las Villas) in Santa Clara and then worked for two years in the building of hotels and tourist centers in Varadero Beach.
Copperi (Luis Alberto Pérez Copperi), born Cienfuegos, 1974, where he lives and works today. He studied at the Cienfuegos School of Visual Arts at the elementary school level but had no further art training after the age of 15. He graduated from the University of Las Villas as an architect but now works full time on his art. He’s had several solo exhibits and participated in many group shows in Cienfuegos, had a solo show in Madrid and was part of a group show at the Cuban Art Space. Copperi’s monochromatic drawings on rough brown paper are about his Cienfuegos world, one that is limited by geography but without limits psychologically, politically or spiritually. His ideas are strong and sensual, yet presented with a gentleness that reflects his personality.
Villalvilla (Camilo Salvador Díaz de Villalvilla Soto), born Cienfuegos, 1976, where he lives and works today. In addition to his art, he is the graphic designer for the newspaper 5 de Septiembre and taught at the Cienfuegos School for Art Instructors from 2003 to 2007. He has had several solo shows in Cienfuegos and participated in dozens of group shows there and in Havana, in Mexico and in the U.S. He has illustrated more than a dozen newspapers, magazines and books and designed numerous art catalogs. Villalvilla enjoys playing with symbols of the Cuban Revolution and many of his works can be found in public spaces in Cienfuegos – a large mural in a city park, a sculpture in the Punta Gorda sculpture park and two other large murals, one in a space for art aficionados and one in a large educational center.
