William Pérez William Pérez was born in Cienfuegos in 1965. He studied at the Rolando Escardó Elementary School of Visual Arts, and later continued his studies at the San Alejandro Academy in Havana, graduating in sculpture in 1986. He is a member of UNEAC (Cuban Artists and Writers Union), the Hermanos Saiz Association of young artists and CODEMA, the Council for the Development of Monumental and Environmental Sculpture and is a founder of Grupo Punto, a group of young sculptors in Cienfuegos. He has had more than 15 one-man shows in Cuba and abroad, including several in Havana, a show of drawings in Monterrey, Mexico (1993) and of sculpture in Cologne, Germany (1994) and Denmark (1997. In 1999 he served on the jury for the Visual Arts National Prize. This is his first one-man show in the United States. Pérez has taken part in more than 100 group shows in Cuba and abroad. Among the most important in Cuba were two shows at the Centro Nacional de Desarrollo de las Artes Visuales in Havana: “El objeto esculturado” (1990) and “La conjunción de la nada: arte cubano del nuevo milenio” (2000); the first Salon of Contemporary Cuban Art at the Museum of Fine Arts in Havana (1995) and the second at the Convent of Santa Clara (1998) in Havana. Abroad, Pérez was included in shows in Brazil, Spain, Martinique, Belgium and Germany; in the United States he has shown both at the Cuban Art Space and Studio 88 in New York. Pérez builds monumental sculptures when possible, and several of his completed works can be found in public spaces in Cuba. As part of Grupo Punto he has exhibited these sculptures in Cienfuegos, Havana, Holguín, Pinar del Rio and in Cologne. One of the most important shows was “Sobrecarga” at the International Press Center in Havana at the time of the 6th Havana Biennial in 1997. William Pérez has been the recipient of more than 20 prizes in Cuban art competitions, and is an invited participant in the 7th Havana Biennial, which will be held in November, 2000. |
